What you need to know about Boiler Cover

The UK’s largest energy providers capitalise on our fear of losing hot water and heating by increasing prices of boiler breakdown cover year on year.  By following this quick guide you could save up to £100 a year on boiler cover.  So read on to find out how you could make a great saving.

It should be noted that only homeowners need to consider boiler cover.  If you are currently renting, then it is the responsibility of your landlord to organise boiler cover.  However, regardless of whether you own or rent, you should insist on having a gas safety certificate, and if you do rent then this should be renewed by your landlord every year.  It is also worth mentioning that not all homes can be insured for boiler cover.  For example, mobile homes, bedsits and commercial properties are excluded from cover and in most cases require specialist cover.  You should also check with your home insurance provider to see whether or not you are already covered for boiler breakdown, to avoid being “double covered”.

Deciding on the level of cover you require can also be difficult as you don’t want to be “over covered” as such.  It is sometimes worthwhile and more cost effective to insure your central heating and boiler under the one policy.  Moreover it can also be a good idea to have your boiler inspected annually to reduce your monthly premiums.  Many insurance providers offer around the clock cover for your boiler but beware as some only cover the cost of the initial two or three hours labour, so you should check how long the work will take to carry out before opting for a call out.  Also be aware that many insurers will not cover damages to the boiler as a direct result of faults with the rest of the heating system such as poorly maintained pipe work, cracked radiators or other faults associated with poor maintenance. We would advise having your central heating system inspected by a corgi registered plumber before taking out any form of insurance cover. For especially old central heating system you may be required to replace you old heating units with modern cast iron radiators before insurers will cover you.

Finally the vast majority of policies insist on an initial no claims period which can last anywhere from two weeks to a month.  Although not unreasonable on the part of insurers, it’s worth bearing in mind, and not delaying to get your cover plans in order, should the worst happen.

Finally, in your quest to find the most cost effective boiler cover, you must remember that you don’t have to opt for the policy of your current energy provider.  Checking comparison websites as well as ones that aren’t listed are an effective way of finding the best cover for you and can save you a lot of money.  So do your research and get saving!
